What causes lower back pain?

Lower back pain can present as intense and severe, or as dull, aching, and nagging. You may experience it after an incident, such as moving furniture or a car accident, or it may develop over time due to arthritis or poor posture.

Pain in the lower back can occur due to any number of reasons. These include:

  • Strain or sprain in the muscles of the lower back
  • Degeneration or herniation of the discs between the vertebrae
  • Compression of the vertebrae
  • Damage to the ligaments in the spine
  • Pressure on the sciatic nerve
  • Narrowing of the spinal column as occurs in spinal stenosis

What is sciatica?

Sciatica occurs due to compression of the large sciatic nerve. You may feel symptoms of pain in your lower back that radiate through your buttocks and down one leg. The sensations are usually tingling, numbness, and burning. At Keystone Health & Wellness Center, Dr. Ryan and Nurse Practitioner Odom can determine if your lower back pain is a result of sciatica and use chiropractic adjustments and physical rehabilitation exercises to help relieve the compression and, consequently, your pain.

What other treatments are available for lower back pain?

Your specific treatment plan depends on the underlying cause of your lower back pain. At Keystone Health & Wellness Center, the primary goal of the providers is to diagnose the underlying cause of your back pain so they can effectively relieve it.

Dr. Ryan often uses chiropractic adjustments to realign the vertebrae and relieve nerve and muscular pain caused by these imbalances. He also educates you on exercises to help improve your posture and correct muscle imbalances. You may be provided with a back brace to support the soft tissue of your back as you sit or do physical activity. Dr. Ryan may also treat you with high-powered TENS, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, therapy. The machine sends stimulating pulses across your skin to help prevent pain signals from reaching the brain. The stimulation also encourages your body to produce higher levels of endorphins, natural chemicals that dull pain sensations.

If you have suddenly developed back pain, or have been suffering for some time, consult the practitioners at Keystone Health & Wellness Center today. They can help you find relief and improve your quality of life.
